About the book!
The Gentle Answer responds to the Muslim claims by placing the Bible and the Qur'an on a level scholarly playing field to show that questions about the Qur'an are at least as challenging as questions about the Bible.
"Over the 20 years I have been dialoguing with Muslims, the accusation that “the Bible has been corrupted” is the most common I hear. Gordon does a great job showing how that polemic developed later in Islam—it’s not there in the Qur’an, Hadith, or early Tafsir literature. He also offers a great summary of the latest critical scholarship on the Qur’an".

"Thus far we have seen that neither the Qur’an itself, nor the understandings of the Qur’an among the earliest Muslim commentators, make a clear and distinct accusation about the material alteration of the earlier scriptures. Wherever the Qur’an names the earlier scriptures, it speaks about them only with respect. In the commentaries, the overwhelming majority of references to the earlier scriptures picture them as available and intact sources of attestation to the messenger of Islam. The few accusations of falsification that do appear in the commentaries need to be read in the context of the majority understanding."

Book Chapters
1
Chapter 1: Invitation to Read and Reason
Scholarly, academic, non-confessional study of the Quran has lagged behind the study of the Bible to such an extent that a prominent scholar of the Quran could write in 1977 that "as a document susceptible of analysis by the instruments and techniques of Biblical criticism," the Quran was "virtually unknown."
2
Chapter 2: The Qur'an's Respectful view of the Bible
"The Gentle Answer" responds to many of the accusations in an attack on the Bible widely distributed in South Asia as well as across to Turkey in the west and Indonesia in the east, the "Iẓhār al-ḥaqq." Section 2 of my book seeks to correct many misconceptions about the Bible upon which the "Iẓhār" is based.
3
Chapter 3: The Respectful view of Muslim Exegetes
Muslim polemic against the Bible does not pause to inquire how the great commentators on the Qur'an interpreted the verses that polemicists like to quote in an effort to support their accusations. The interpretations of the exegetes were strikingly different from the polemical use of the "tampering verses" past and present. This post is chapter 3 of my book "The Gentle Answer to the Muslim Accusation of Biblical Falsification" -- a response to the famous polemic by Rahmatallah Kairanwi, "Iẓḥār al-ḥaqq."
4
Chapter 4: Tales of Intact Scriptures
Whenever the Quran explicitly mentions the pre-Islamic scriptures, it consistently describes them only in the most positive and respectful terms. I thought I would document this early on in my response to Muslim accusations of biblical falsification, "The Gentle Answer."
5
Chapter 5: The Matter of the Messenger
Whenever the Quran explicitly mentions the pre-Islamic scriptures, it consistently describes them only in the most positive and respectful terms. I thought I would document this early on in my response to Muslim accusations of biblical falsification, "The Gentle Answer."
6
Chapter 6: The Accusation is False
Whenever the Quran explicitly mentions the pre-Islamic scriptures, it consistently describes them only in the most positive and respectful terms. I thought I would document this early on in my response to Muslim accusations of biblical falsification, "The Gentle Answer."
7
Chapter 7: Judging by False Assumptions
Whenever the Quran explicitly mentions the pre-Islamic scriptures, it consistently describes them only in the most positive and respectful terms. I thought I would document this early on in my response to Muslim accusations of biblical falsification, "The Gentle Answer."
8
Chapter 8: One Gospel in Four Accounts
Whenever the Quran explicitly mentions the pre-Islamic scriptures, it consistently describes them only in the most positive and respectful terms. I thought I would document this early on in my response to Muslim accusations of biblical falsification, "The Gentle Answer."
9
Chapter 9: Reliability of the New Testament
Whenever the Quran explicitly mentions the pre-Islamic scriptures, it consistently describes them only in the most positive and respectful terms. I thought I would document this early on in my response to Muslim accusations of biblical falsification, "The Gentle Answer."
10
Chapter 10: Reliability of the Hebrew Scriptures
Whenever the Quran explicitly mentions the pre-Islamic scriptures, it consistently describes them only in the most positive and respectful terms. I thought I would document this early on in my response to Muslim accusations of biblical falsification, "The Gentle Answer."

What Influencers Say...

The Gentle Answer is a brilliant refutation of the charges of corruption by a first rate Qur’anic scholar and missionary practitioner. His thorough familiarity with Arabic, Hebrew and Greek, issues of textual transmission of the Bible and Qur’an, as well as knowledge of the history of the interpretation of the Qur’an are clearly evident in this meticulously researched and impressive work.
Harold A. Netland, PhD

The Gentle Answer to the Muslim Accusation of Biblical Falsification. Dr Nickel’s book sets out to answer in particular, the fierce accusations found in an influential Arabic work, first published in 1864, namely the Izhar al Haqq (which translates as “Demonstration of Truth”) by Rahmat Allah Kairanwi.
